Ebike Glossary: 40 Electric Bike Terms Explained
A plain-English ebike glossary: pedal assist, throttle, torque sensor, mid-drive, Wh, Ah, pedelec, class 1 2 3 and other terms in electric bike buying guides.
This guide is based on public information and manufacturer specifications. We do not claim hands-on testing. Prices and availability change often, and tariffs can move them; check the listing for current details.
Ebike pages are full of jargon. This glossary explains the terms you will meet in reviews and buying guides, in plain English.
Motors and control
- Pedal assist (PAS)
- A motor mode that helps while you pedal, usually with several assist levels.
- Throttle
- A twist or thumb control that powers the bike without pedalling.
- Pedelec
- An ebike where the motor only helps while you pedal.
- Class 1, 2, 3
- US ebike categories based on throttle and assisted speed. See ebike classes.
- Hub motor

- Cadence sensor
- A sensor that detects pedalling but not effort; assist feels more on-off.
- Controller
- The electronics that manage motor power.
- Torque (Nm)
- Twisting force from the motor. Higher numbers help with hills and loads.
- Watts (W)
- Motor power rating. Compare with torque and system design, not alone.
Battery
- Volts (V)
- The electrical pressure of the battery, often 36 V or 48 V.
- Amp-hours (Ah)
- The battery’s charge capacity.
- Watt-hours (Wh)
- Volts times amp-hours; the best number for comparing battery energy. See range explained.
- Range
- How far the bike can go on a charge under given conditions.
- Charge cycle
- One full discharge and recharge of the battery.
- BMS
- The battery management system that protects the cells.
- UL certification
- Safety testing standards for ebike electrical systems. See battery safety.
- Removable battery
- A battery you can take off the bike to charge or store.
Frame and fit
- Step-through frame
- A frame with a low top tube that is easy to mount.
- Folding ebike
- An ebike that folds for storage or transport.

- Standover height
- Height of the top tube; relevant to fit.
- Payload capacity
- Maximum total weight of rider and cargo.
Components
- Hydraulic disc brakes
- Brakes using fluid for strong, consistent stopping.
- Mechanical disc brakes
- Cable-operated disc brakes; simpler but weaker feel.
- Derailleur
- The gear mechanism that moves the chain between sprockets.
- Internal hub gear
- Gears sealed inside the rear hub.
- Display
